Psychology 191A: Teaching College Psychology

Teaching College Psychology provides undergraduates an exciting opportunity to participate in planning and teaching Psychology 1, Introduction to Psychology. This is a great opportunity to find out what teaching is like and it is an excellent way to review for the Subject Psychology GRE while receiving course credit. The class helps students increase their public speaking skills and understand group dynamics. Students who have participated in this course always give a big thumbs up and speak of the camaraderie and fun had with fellow course assistants as immensely rewarding!

How is the course structured?

Students in this course supervise a discussion section in Psychology 1. They meet weekly in a teaching seminar to discuss teaching techniques, review course topics, and plan activities for their discussion sections. They also attend all Psychology 1 lectures for the quarter.

How do I apply?

Applicants must be declared Psychology majors, have some upper-division psychology courses, and feel comfortable facilitating a discussion section. Students who are interested in learning more about Psychology 191A should contact Donna Baldini in the Psychology Administrative Office (273 Social Sciences 2). This course is offered each academic quarter. The application deadline is posted outside the department office and in the monthly Newsletter (pdf).

Psychology 192: Student-Directed Seminar

Upper-division students may teach a lower-division course under faculty supervision. The Psychology Office must be satisfied that a student will profit from the teaching experience and that the course is worthwhile. The course must be closely supervised by a faculty sponsor. The deadline for turning in all paperwork for approval of the course is two quarters before the course is to be offered.
