Pre-Psychology

What is Pre-Psychology?

Pre-Psychology is the lower-division curriculum required before declaring the major. To declare Pre-Psychology means that a student plans to complete the lower-division requirements and will have priority into restricted courses in psychology. Students must complete Pre-Psychology before applying to the Psychology or Intensive Psychology major.

Students who indicate Psychology on their application for admission will be considered PROPOSED psychology majors. Proposed indicates interest only and is NOT any type of major status. For major status, students must first apply to and complete the Pre-psychology curriculum, then apply for the major.

Requirements for Pre-Psychology

To complete the Pre-psychology requirements students must:

  • Complete the Declaration of Major/Minor petition
  • Attend a Pre-psychology declaration workshop
  • Complete the required Pre-psychology coursework

Proposed Study Plan/Declaration of Major/Minor

To declare Pre-Psychology obtain and complete the Declaration of Major/Minor form from your college office. Have the college advisor sign off on Section 1. Bring your study plan to a Pre-Psychology declaration workshop.

Note: Students must be declared Pre-Psychology to enroll in Psychology 3, Research Methods, and Psychology 10, Introduction to Developmental Psychology.

Pre-Psychology Declaration Workshop

  • Remember to bring your signed Declaration of Major/Minor petition.
  • Bring verification of any completed work from required psych/math classes (download from my.ucsc.edu.)
  • Location: Social Sciences 2, Room 265.
  • No advance signup is needed. Each declaration workshop is approximately 30 minutes.

Pre-Psychology Course Requirements

There are five lower-division courses that must be passed with a grade of C or better:

  • Math 3: Precalculus (or equivalent)
  • Psychology 1: Introduction to Psychology
  • Psychology 2: Introduction to Psychological Statistics
  • Psychology 3: Research Methods in Psychology
  • Psychology 10: Introduction to Developmental Psychology

LETTER GRADE NOTE: Courses graded D or F (or transfer courses with a C-, D, or F) may NOT be used to satisfy major/minor requirements. Also, please refer to the Disqualification Policy.
