
Placements Home Field Study Program Placements
Please visit the field study program in the Psychology Department Office to
read a full listing of all placements offered to students. You can also view all
positions online at the Career Center Jobs and Internships site.
A limited view is available to prospective students. Below are a few
examples of placements you can read about more specifically in the field study
office.
Working with Children
- Special Education Intern
Work with a special education classroom as an assistant. Learn about the field of school psychology.
- Therapeutic Childcare Provider
Assist in a therapeutic childcare program for children who's mothers are in a residential drug abuse treatment program.
- Behavior Aide
Be trained as a behavior modification specialist for an in home program for a child with Autism. Assist a young child learn how to speak, interact and learn new skills.
- Teacher's Aide
Assist teachers in an early childhood development program for children under five.
- Teacher’s Aide
Assist teachers at a non-private school for children with Autism.
- Counselor’s assistant
Work with children in groups and one-to-one to learn positive communication and coping skills. Work with a school psychologist on a school site.
- Fifth grade classroom
Work with a dynamic fifth grade teacher in a classroom environment. Focus attention on kids who are struggling socially and academically.
- Mentor
Work one on one with children removed from their homes by child protective services or in danger of being removed. Act as a mentor/friend to children needing extra attention. Communicate with primary therapist regarding treatment goals and activities.
- Domestic Violence Prevention Program Assistant
After comprehensive training interns run support and skill building groups for children who live or have lived with domestic violence.
Working with Adolescents
- Social Work Intern
Work with adolescents in foster care who are in a special transition program to help them become financially independent by gaining employment and/or enrolling in school.
- After school program
Implement recreational, academic and support programs for middle school aged children in an after school enrichment program.
- Group Home Assistant
Work in a group home setting for adolescent girls in foster care.
- Alternative high school
Work with the clinical and academic components of a clean and sober high school in Santa Cruz. Assist with sports, group support and classroom participation.
- Mentor
Provide one to one mentoring to teens trying to remain clean and sober. Work with clinical psychologists working with the kids.
Working with Adults
- Center for the Blind Assistant
Work at a local center for adults with blindness. Assist with a new spinning program teaching adults to spin yarn from wool.
- Psychiatric Lock Down Facility
Work with adult residents at a psychiatric lock down facility for people with severe mental illness. Assist residents in becoming informed about their disease and learn skills to live independently.
- Public Defender’s Office
Work with the investigation unit to help translate for attorneys, conduct interviews with witnesses and victims and help take cases to court.
- Probation Department
Work with a probation officer on their adult probation
caseloads. Make follow up calls to clients, go on community visits, assist
with caseload planning.
- Transistional Housing for People with Mental Illness
Help staff to run groups, organize outings and talk with residents one to one who are learning skills to live independently.
