Psychology 193- Psychology Field Study
Spring Quarter 2008

Description: Psychology Field Study is a course designed for Psychology majors to apply what they have learned in other academic courses to a community setting while pursuing academic topics of interest to each individual. Students are interns at a community agency while working with a faculty sponsor to complete an academic project. Activities to support student learning such as workshops, discussion groups and other events designed for students strengthen learning. All students keep a journal of their experience.

Objectives: By the end of each quarter of field study you should:

  1. Have a more tangible understanding of how psychological research connects to a practical setting in the community.
  2. Be able to critically reflect on your experience in the field through discussion, your journal and academic work.

Requirements/Responsibilities:

  • Have a completed field study contract.
  • Complete 10 hours a week of work at your placement each week.
  • Use your journal as a tool to explore ideas and record your experience.
  • Complete two evaluations of field study:
  • Mid-Quarter Reflection Due: Friday, May 2nd
  • Final Assessment Due: Friday, June 6th
  • Complete an academic project pre-approved by your faculty sponsor. Due: Friday, June 6th
  • Maintain clear, consistent communication with your faculty sponsor, meeting at least two times during the quarter, or more if required.

Evaluations:
Field Study is P/NP only. Your narrative will be based on:

  • Meeting all requirements for the course.
  • The quality of your academic project.
  • Performance evaluation written by your field supervisor.

Getting the most out of field study:

  • Keep up with your journal. Use it often to take good care of yourself emotionally, ask difficult questions and catalogue your experience at your placement.
