My primary research interest is in normative sexualities. I want to explore how it is we learn about gender and sexuality and through what means we are taught or discover what is considered to be “normal.” What happens to people, particularly women, who deviate from “normal” gender and sexuality? How is this used to oppress women? More broadly, how is women’s sexuality defined by women themselves and by a larger male-dominated society, and how does this differ cross-culturally? How do these sexualities influence women and girl’s psychology and behavior?
Generally, my interests include the sexualization of girls; the social construction of sexuality; sexuality and the media; the effects of HIV/AIDS on women and girls; women's sexual expression cross-culturally and historically; the binary of gender and how it affects our ideas about normal and abnormal sexuality; gender and sexual "deviancy" across cultures and historically; intersexuality; and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender health and sexuality. |
